Netherlands - day 5 - Bodegraven, Gauda

Finally good weather - almost whole day was sunny!

First stop was in Bodegraven, de Molen brewery that we visited last year on the way to Great Britain and Ireland. This year we wanted to go to a brewery tour, which are being held only on Saturdays and for which it is necessary to make a reservation. So while organizing the trip we arranged to be here on Saturday. 1-2 weeks before the trip we e-mailed them to make the reservations, but unfortunatelly they were already booked for this weekend and said it is recommended to book at least 3-4 weeks in advance. So another year without de Molen brewery tour. But at least we got to try some new porters and stouts that they make sooo tasty.

again oldtimers near the de Molen brewery, just like last year

After Bodegraven we went to Gauda, where we got the accommodation by Vrienden. There we had interesting hosts, married couple who at that time also had a student from France staying there. Host's grandfather owned the mill which is now de Molen brewery. Hostess knitts hats for boiled eggs. They also have a small garden full of flowers, strawberries and spice herbs, and have few hen.

bike parking near train station

We wanted to buy train tickets by card and once again it was rejected. There can be only so much coincidence so we finally googled it and it turned out that you are most likely not able to use your debit card if it is not from the Netherlands bank. Even most of the credit cards are rejected. You can get the money from ATM's, but can not pay with cards in the shops/restaurants etc. This is the first time it ever happened to us in any Europe country so it is good to know for the future.

Gauda also has a park...

... with birds...

... lots of them.
